The Acting Deputy Under Secretary for Rural Development in the United States is Vernita Dore. ==Vernita Dore== Vernita F. Dore was appointed South Carolina State Director for USDA Rural Development by President Barack Obama in August 2009. Dore began her career with the Department of Army as a Management Analyst. In 1987, she became a career employee with USDA Rural Development, where she was later promoted to the position of Area Director. Since then, Dore has built up a wealth of experience, with twenty-eight years of leadership and support for rural communities across the U.S. Currently, she administers a multi-billion dollar portfolio in community economic development projects and directs a staff of skilled and dedicated employees to fulfill the agency’s mission—to increase economic opportunity and improve the quality of life for all rural Americans. During her tenure as State Director, over $5 billion in Rural Development funds was invested in South Carolina. Recently, Dore served as Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary for Rural Development and Acting Deputy Under Secretary. Dore is dedicated to nurturing and empowering children. Dore’s significant achievements include securing financial resources to re-build and renovate schools and build new libraries equipped with 21st century technology. One of her most notable successes was funding the Dillon County Middle School, which replaced the old and dilapidated JV Martin Junior High, highly publicized by President Obama during his campaign for President. Additionally, she secured a $6.5 million loan and an unprecedented $2.5 million grant to build a new library on St. Helena Island. These educational investments brought South Carolina’s youth a chance for a brighter future and the ability to compete and win in the 21st century workforce. Dore has also led Rural Development’s efforts to create jobs and economic opportunities for rural citizens and to foster the development of renewable energy businesses across the state. As an active leader of the community, Dore serves as co-chair of the South Carolina Rural Development Council and a member of the boards of the Beaufort-Jasper Higher Education Commission, the BNCC Society of Christian Women, and the South Carolina Women’s Connection. A native of Beaufort, South Carolina, Dore earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of South Carolina. She has received additional professional development from Harvard’s John F.
